AI is perfect for creating how-to tips products! It’s a slam dunk, right? Easy peasy.

That’s true, AND…

One year after AI arrived like a tidal wave on the beaches of many worldwide businesses large and small, a new Subject Matter Expert client came to us to explore expanding her product line and generating new revenue streams for her well-established business prosperitythinkers.com 

She wrote and published 12 related non-fiction books and now, on referral from a mutual colleague, was interested in having a 52-tip companion product for each of the 12 books. The first step is usually for the client to supply source material – a book, articles, interview transcripts, or their web content from which we would cull 52 tips. On a rare occasion, a Subject Matter Expert would offer to write the 52 tips themself. We provide the writing formula and other specific aspects defining the structure of the 52-tip manuscript on which a product line would be developed, and off we go together.

 

This time was different. The new client said she’d provide us the tips to review. It turned out that she was the first client to send us 52 tips generated by AI, which was also the basis of the source material for each of the next 11 books. And yes, we reviewed those tips manuscripts…and edited each of those documents from her. Initially, they looked good. Several hours later in each case, we realized the document she sent needed a lot of editing to become the end product structured the way we knew had been successful.

A lot of what that experience confirmed how important it is to:

1. Create the writing style to be consistent throughout the document, using this formula:

a. “Start one sentence with a positive verb, telling the reader or listener what TO do. A second sentence explains why or how.”

b. This is not that: “Don’t wait to start an emergency fund. Maxing out credit cards is not the same as an emergency fund.”

2. Make the AI prompt very specific in every aspect that matters. That includes the writing formula, equal division of 52 tips into 4 sections, a 30-word maximum per 2-sentence tip, a welcome, and an About the Author. (THAT is an example of a well-written prompt.

3. Have the tips edited by a tips expert. The clients’ brilliance is in different areas than our tips experts..

4. Recognize that tips generated by AI need to be edited and will still save time compared to reading through the larger source materials like books to cull tips.

5. Enjoy the additional time to consult with the client about marketing their products because the AI-generated tips were faster to edit.

6. Notice how easy it can be for a Subject Matter Expert to slip into using industry-specific vocabulary or other jargon without realizing people outside that field may have no idea what it means

Before considering AI generated how-to tips, many Subject Matter Experts jumped to the conclusion they can write their own tips when first discovering the idea of monetizing the how-to-tips. You might be one of those people. They have typically been giving their existing tips away free, as a download on their website, as a lead magnet, on social media, in their full length books, or when they are speaking, presenting workshops, having a conversation with a prospective client, or even in a social situation. AI can seem to be an instant wave of a magic wand, spewing out 52 tips reflecting a person’s expertise. However…
